Sooty grouse shares Nevada's combined "Blue (Dusky and Sooty) and Ruffed Grouse" 13-county season area with dusky and ruffed grouse, but occupies a genuinely different range from either: as the coastal/Pacific-slope lineage of blue grouse, its Nevada range is confined to the extreme western edge of the state along the California border, in mountain ranges on the Sierra Nevada's eastern fringe, rather than the Great Basin interior ranges dusky grouse occupies further east.
No formal population survey program exists for this species in this state.
