How the record is kept

Where these dates come from

Every determination is sourced.Points Afield tracks 38 game-bird species across all 50 states — 1,018 state-by-species determinations for the 2026–27 season, each one carrying a citation back to the wildlife agency that issued it. Season dates, bag limits and shooting hours are read out of that agency's own regulation for that season. They are not carried forward from last year's dates, and they are not aggregated from other hunting sites. All 50 state agencies are represented, and each is named on the page that relies on it. Where a state publishes a season as a standing annual rule rather than a fresh proclamation, the page says so rather than implying a confirmation that never happened.

A no is an answer.565 of those determinations record that the bird does not occur in that state at all, and another 92 are closures, populations the state does not regulate as game, or seasons the agency has not published yet. Points Afield writes those down and explains them rather than leaving a gap, because "you cannot hunt chukar in Michigan, and here is the agency page that says so" is usually what the trip actually turned on. 361 pairs carry a dated, regulated season, and those are the ones with windows, bag limits and shooting hours on the page. Every pair except the absent ones gets a page of its own, whether the answer that year is a season or a closure.

What this is not. This is a record of what each state agency has published, not the regulation itself, and it is not a substitute for the regulation booklet. Seasons get amended mid-year, emergency closures happen, and license requirements vary by residency, unit and weapon, so a date on one of these pages is only as current as the agency's own publication for that season. That is why every page names the agency it came from and links straight to it. Before you hunt, read the current regulation, confirm the dates and any permit or stamp you need, and treat the agency's page as the final word if it ever differs from ours.
