Gambel's quail is Nevada's southern desert quail, confined to the Mojave Desert corner of the state (Clark, Lincoln, and Nye counties), the mirror image of California quail's western-Nevada range. NDOW's own species page describes the population as native to the Mojave Desert and the southern portion of the Great Basin, well adapted to the harsh desert climate found in southern Nevada. Independent hunting-press sourcing narrows this further to riparian desert-wash habitat along the Muddy, Virgin, and Colorado River corridors, with Overton Wildlife Management Area (Moapa Valley, Clark County) named as a specific concentration point. NDOW itself runs a real regional monitoring program here (jointly with chukar), 20 trail cameras at water sources across Clark, Lincoln, and Nye counties, operated with the Southern Nevada Chapter of Quail Forever.
No formal population survey program exists for this species in this state.
