Ruffed grouse is the third species in Nevada's combined "Blue (Dusky and Sooty) and Ruffed Grouse" 13-county season area, and has the narrowest real range of the three. The shared 13-county zone spans nearly the entire state from Carson City to White Pine County, but ruffed grouse's own documented Nevada presence is consistently described as confined to the state's northeast, centered on the aspen/riparian drainages of the Jarbidge Mountains in northern Elko County, near the species' association with quaking aspen and the range's higher-elevation forested pockets. That same northern Elko County corner is where ruffed grouse's range comes closest to dusky grouse's own eastern Great Basin range, making it the one part of the shared zone where a hunter could realistically target both species under the group's combined bag limit (3 daily, 9 in possession, across all three species combined).
