Mountain quail is Nevada's high-elevation, dense-brush quail, occupying mountain-range island pockets across nearly the entire state rather than one contiguous region. NDOW's own official fact sheet is unusually precise: it distinguishes a currently-confirmed breeding population (Carson Range, from the state's Breeding Bird Atlas) from a broader set of historically documented mountain ranges across central and northeastern Nevada, with the explicit caveat that some of those outlying populations may themselves be introduced. Independent sourcing adds that the species is believed present in every Nevada county except Clark, and that NDOW has an active trap-and-transplant program targeting new range in Lincoln County.
