Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) publishes an annual Upland Bird Forecast broken out across the state's seven small game management regions. Pheasant range is concentrated in the western two-thirds of the state; the Smoky Hills (northcentral) and Northern High Plains (northwest) are the core, with the Southern High Plains (southwest) and South Central Prairies also holding birds. The Glaciated Plains (northeast) has recorded no pheasants on survey routes for two straight years, and the Flint Hills / Osage Cuestas (southeast) fall outside the species' primary range entirely.
Provisional: KDWP's own Upland Bird Forecast, the same document covering bobwhite and scaled quail, still reads "coming this fall." Pheasants Forever's 2026 forecast is cautiously optimistic in the meantime: "nowhere are we hearing that anything is down," with wet conditions restoring habitat after prior drought years. Western Kansas remains the primary pheasant ground.
