Nebraska is at the western edge of American woodcock's breeding range. BONO (NGPC's own ornithological reference) states "woodcock distribution generally follows east-west river systems, with higher densities in the east and reports becoming scattered and localized westward," with the species essentially absent over most of central and western Nebraska. Prior to European settlement, woodcock were restricted to the Missouri River and lower portions of major tributaries; the species remained rarely reported anywhere in the state until the late 1970s and has been "widespread albeit somewhat localized" across the eastern half since the late 1980s/early 1990s.
