Statewide season.Requires purchase of a pheasant stamp. Bag limit confirmed verbatim from WI DNR's live regulations tool (Fall 2026-Spring 2027 edition).
Season is statewide, and DNR's own pheasant hunting page gives a real, if broad, wild-population geography distinct from its stocking program: today's pheasant population is most common in the west-central and southeastern regions of the state. Independent hunting-guide sourcing narrows the southeastern piece to specific counties, namely Dodge, Jefferson, Walworth and Rock, a south-central/southeastern agricultural belt, though that county list is not verified against a DNR county-level source. The separate stocking program (roughly 3,000 birds released each December across about 25 state properties in central and southern Wisconsin) is a put-and-take supplement to hunting opportunity, not a wild-population indicator, and is distinct from the wild range.
WI DNR's 2026 spring roadside survey (published June 24, 2026) recorded a pheasant abundance index of 0.73 birds/stop, down from 0.81 in 2025, though still the third consecutive year above the state's own 5-year average of 0.56/stop, so this is a pullback from an unusually good run rather than a poor season outright. Abundance remained highest in northwestern Wisconsin and lowest in the east-central region, worth factoring into where you hunt this year.
No single cause given for the year-over-year decline — the state's own survey reports the figure without attributing it to a specific weather event or other factor.
