Wisconsin DNR publishes no density map or zone system for mourning dove. The strongest sub-state signal is a coarse but real habitat-driven split: independent sourcing describes doves as more abundant in the southern two-thirds of the state, consistent with the species' well-documented preference for agricultural landscapes (open fields with weed seed and grain, feeding/nesting/roosting mixes) and its avoidance of unbroken forest, which by elimination points away from Wisconsin's heavily-forested northern third (the same region that is the state's woodcock stronghold). DNR's own dove-management page corroborates this shape indirectly rather than contradicting it: the department's banding-site network is described as expanding into some northern areas of the state, implying the existing network was concentrated elsewhere (the south) before that expansion.
The federal survey cannot say whether Wisconsin dove numbers are rising or falling. Its 2016 to 2025 estimate comes out at -0.03% per year, but the range around it runs from -1.33% to +1.29%, wide enough in both directions that no direction can be called. Read that as unknown, not as steady. The figures also run through 2025, one season behind this fall.
