Mountain quail in Washington splits into two geographically distinct populations that do not overlap with the current legal hunting range, a distinction worth flagging explicitly. WDFW's own mountain quail species page states the species' true native range is southeastern Washington, naming Asotin, Garfield, and Columbia counties as the mountain quail's native range, with the species historically present in Klickitat County as well. That native SE Washington population has severely declined (WDFW released 309 birds into the Asotin Creek watershed 2005-2013 to restore it, with post-release six-month survival of only 18-34%) and sits entirely within Eastern Washington, which is closed to mountain quail hunting statewide. The population that is actually huntable is a separate, non-native introduced population in Western Washington, described by WDFW as somewhat common there; the state's own quail hunting page and current regulations confirm the season is open in Western Washington only, with Eastern Washington, including the species' entire native range, closed. No county-level breakdown of the Western Washington introduced population exists.
