Season is statewide, but chukar's real Colorado population is concentrated in a narrow band of the Western Slope. CPW's own species account states self-sustaining populations “succeeded best in the canyons and hills of west central Colorado in Montrose, Delta, Mesa and Garfield counties,” with “greatest concentrations along the Colorado and Gunnison river drainages below 6,600 feet.” A second, smaller resident population is indicated in Montezuma County (extreme southwest Colorado). CPW has also attempted, since 2014, to establish an entirely new population east of the Continental Divide in the Poudre Canyon (Front Range foothills, Larimer County) using wild-caught Utah birds — the first attempt at an established Colorado population east of the Divide; CPW's own page cautions this remains an expansion effort, not a confirmed population, and that game-farm/hunting-club releases mean stray birds “can turn up almost anywhere” in the state today.
