Colorado sits at the extreme southeastern edge of greater sage-grouse's continental range, and the entire population is confined to the northwestern part of the state. CPW's own species account names seven distinct sub-populations: Northwest Colorado, North Park (roughly 20% of the statewide population on its own), Middle Park, Northern Eagle-Southern Routt, Parachute-Piceance-Roan (PPR), Meeker/White River, and Laramie River (a small population shared with adjoining Wyoming/southern-Laramie-River habitat). This matches the regulation's two-season GMU structure almost exactly: Season 2 covers North Park specifically, and Season 1 covers the rest of the GMUs spanning the other six populations. Birds generally occupy open sagebrush ridges, plateaus, and flats between 6,000-9,000 feet.
