Gambel's quail in Colorado is restricted to the extreme southwest corner of the state, at the very edge of the species' Sonoran/Chihuahuan-desert continental range. Independent ornithological and birding-trail sourcing places the population specifically in Montezuma County near Cortez, in low desert-canyon habitat below roughly 5,500 feet, the same corner of the state already flagged in the regulation as falling outside CPW's Eastern Plains Pheasant and Quail Forecast's geographic scope and outside any dedicated CPW survey program. Described locally as rare even within this small range.
