Arizona's one huntable native mountain grouse species (Mogollon Rim/White Mountains high-elevation conifer forest). Migratory bird stamp not required. No other grouse species (ruffed, sage, sharp-tailed, spruce, sooty) are regulated or present in AZ.
AZGFD's own species profile and annual Small Game Forecast agree: dusky grouse in Arizona are confined almost entirely to spruce-fir and mixed conifer/aspen forest above 8,500 feet, which restricts the species to three named high-elevation ranges plus one active reintroduction area. This is Arizona's one huntable native mountain grouse species, the season excludes Unit 31, consistent with the Mogollon Rim area still being a young, closely-managed transplant population rather than an open range.
No formal population survey program exists for this species in this state.
