AZGFD's own species profile and its annual Small Game Forecast agree closely: chukar were introduced from the late 1930s through the early 1970s at more than 37 sites statewide, and almost all of those transplants failed. Today the state's wild chukar are essentially confined to remote canyon country north of the Colorado River on the eastern Arizona Strip, primarily the Kanab Creek drainage and its tributaries, plus one disjunct population in Cataract Canyon west of Tusayan near the Grand Canyon's South Rim. Hunting-community sourcing (huntnowarizona.com, cross-checked against the agency description) narrows this further to two named hunt units.
