As publishedSept 1 – Dec 31, 2026 (both zones)
Same season dates apply to both zones; only the bag/possession limit differs.North Zone = north of I-40, South Zone = south of I-40. This is NM's only regulated grouse species (state's 'Upland Game' glossary entry is simply 'grouse', and no other grouse species is present/regulated). Falconry season Sept 1 2026–Feb 28 2027 (combined with pheasant, 3/day aggregate, 6 possession). HIP not required.
New Mexico's only regulated grouse species reaches the southern terminus of its range here, and its distribution is sharply uneven, a real, sourced regional split that lines up cleanly with NMDGF's own North Zone/South Zone bag-limit boundary. New Mexico Partners in Flight's own species account names the exact mountain ranges: a genuine (if rare) resident population in the Sangre de Cristo, San Juan, and Jemez mountains, versus a very rare isolated presence in the Mogollons and other western ranges to the south, with local extirpation already documented in the Zuni Mountains.
No formal population survey program exists for this species in this state.
