MDIFW's own American Woodcock Assessment gives a precisely quantified breakdown for Maine: 57% of the state's estimated 1995 spring woodcock population (and a correspondingly higher breeding population index of 3.22 singing males per route, vs. 3.00) occurred in the Forest/Agriculture/Residential WMD group (WMDs 3,6,11-13,15-17,20-30, central and southern Maine, including the Capitol region), versus 43% in the Industrial Forest WMD group (WMDs 1,2,4,5,7-10,14,18,19, plus Baxter State Park, the northern 'big woods'). The Assessment itself flags that northern Maine's Singing-ground Survey coverage is thin (12 of 16 routes selected in the 1960s in northern WMDs 1,2,4,5 have never been run), so the true northern population may be underrepresented in the survey data even though the habitat-area-weighted estimate already favors the south.
