Northern bobwhite quail is Florida's only huntable upland bird, with a statewide season running from mid-November through the first week of March; quail may also be taken during the archery, crossbow, and muzzleloading gun seasons using those seasons' own methods, and individual Wildlife Management Area seasons and bag limits can differ from the statewide dates. The state's strongest wild populations concentrate in the Panhandle and north-central Florida, specifically around Tallahassee, Lake City, and Ocala, the Florida end of the Red Hills region that spans north Florida and southwest Georgia between the Ochlockonee and Aucilla Rivers and is anchored by Tallahassee and Thomasville, Georgia. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission runs its own public quota quail hunts at Apalachicola and Blackwater Wildlife Management Areas in the Panhandle and Jennings Forest Wildlife Management Area in north-central Florida, the same regional cluster, with Three Lakes Wildlife Management Area in central Florida as an outlier site further south.
