No zone distinctions; single statewide season structure.
The DWR blog's own American Woodcock feature quotes the Virginia Gold Book (DWR's official wildlife-status reference) directly: “American Woodcock are uncommon to common winter residents in the coastal plain and uncommon winter residents in the Piedmont, Mountains and Valleys” — a real, agency-sourced regional density statement favoring the Coastal Plain during the winter season that overlaps most of Virginia's Nov-Jan hunting season. The same source gives region-specific breeding egg-laying windows (Coastal Plain Feb 11-Apr 21; Piedmont Mar 3-May 20; Mountains and Valleys Apr 1-May 18), confirming the species breeds statewide even though winter density is Coastal-Plain-weighted. A separate DWR/Young Forest Project habitat program names Mattaponi WMA (King and Queen/King William counties, inner Coastal Plain) as holding “some of the best woodcock habitat in Virginia,” citing damp floodplain soils ideal for earthworm foraging, with active DWR timber-thinning/clearcutting there since 2013 specifically to maintain young-forest singing-ground cover.
