Bag limit shared/aggregate with Gambel's quail (may be taken singly or in combination).Statewide. Youth hunt Oct. 31-Nov. 2, 2026.
UDWR's own 2022 Upland Game Management Plan states California quail are not native to Utah, introduced as early as 1896 (a separate UDWR species page dates the original release to 1869 near Fort Douglas, Salt Lake City), and have been established in the northern portions of the state, tending to be most abundant along the Wasatch Front, often in urban environments, and the Uinta Basin, but found in many areas throughout the state. Winter snow can constrain distribution to lower elevations or the state's southern regions (cited to Leopold 1977). UDWR does not run a population survey for California quail; instead it actively traps and translocates quail from urban Wasatch Front areas (parks, golf courses, cemeteries) each winter to more remote sites with suitable habitat, both augmenting existing populations and seeding new ones, meaning the species' range is partly a product of an ongoing, deliberate DWR redistribution program rather than a purely natural distribution. Bag limit is shared/aggregate with Gambel's quail, but the two species occupy genuinely distinct core ranges despite the shared regulation.
Governed by UDWR's Upland Game Annual Report (retrospective harvest/inventory compilation, editions found back to 1998); the most recent edition found is 2024-25 (wildlife.utah.gov/pdf/uplandgame/annual_reports/2024-25.pdf). The report covers a July-June fiscal year, so a 2025-26 edition would not be expected until after that year closes; none found as of 2026-08-19, no fixed publish date confirmed.
