Peafowl

Peafowl in Hawaii live in dry leeward-slope forest where banana poka fruit is available, on Hawaii Island's Puuwaawaa Ranch area and Oahu's Mount Kaala/Makaha Valley. Unlike most Hawaii game birds, they were introduced for ornamental reasons, not hunting stock.

How to hunt Peafowl

Terrain

A real, currently pursued hunt on both Hawai'i Island and O'ahu, authorized as an additional game bird rather than under its own dedicated listing. On Hawai'i Island, hunting is centered on Pu'u Wa'awa'a Forest Reserve and Kapapala Cooperative Game Management Area, at 1 bird per day. On O'ahu, it's authorized at the Kuaokalā and Makua Kea'au public hunting units, at 3 birds of either sex per hunter per day. Habitat is localized dry forest on leeward slopes with banana poka fruit: Pu'u Wa'awa'a Ranch (600-1,250 meters elevation) on Hawai'i Island, and the Mt. Ka'ala/Makaha Valley area on O'ahu.

Range

No source, Hawaii or worldwide, gives a tested effective shotgun range for this bird. Reasoned as short-to-moderate, roughly 20 to 35 yards, on the strength of the species' own weak, reluctant flight: peafowl don't fly fast or far when flushed, and their primary defense is running into brush and cover rather than flying away. A group can vanish into foliage within seconds of being pressured.

Method

Daytime, shotgun-only, walked-up spot-and-stalk, consistent with the bird's diurnal ground-foraging habit. Hawaii's statewide rules rule out two methods used for this species elsewhere: only shotguns and bow and arrow are legal for game birds (no rifle, which some worldwide accounts treat as the long-range option for this bird), and night hunting or hunting with artificial light is illegal outright, ruling out spotlighting roosted birds after dark.

What changes through the season

  • Body mass dramatically exceeds every other upland species in this dataset

Male peafowl (4-6 kg/9-13 lb) and female peafowl (2.75-4 kg/6-9 lb) run 3-4x heavier than the largest already-researched pheasant in this dataset. No comparably large upland species exists to scale gear from directly, so this record reasons from waterfowl-class figures (medium/small geese) as the nearest body-mass analogue, even though the hunting method and likely range look nothing like a decoyed or pass-shot waterfowl hunt.

  • Hawaii's statewide shot-size ceiling directly constrains this record's recommendations

Hawaii prohibits BB or larger shot for game birds outside the spring turkey hunt, a blanket rule that caps every shot type in this record at #1 or smaller regardless of what this bird's body mass would otherwise call for. This produces a real, disclosed shortfall in the steel branch specifically, where a bird this size would normally call for BB or BBB.

  • Body-shot vs. a turkey-style headshot is worth considering given the size/shot-size mismatch

No source confirms whether Hawaii hunters take a conventional body-pattern shot or a more turkey-like precision head/neck shot on this species. Given the legal shot-size ceiling paired with this bird's unusually large body, a well-placed head/neck shot may be a more reliable option than relying on a capped-size pellet's body-shot energy, the same reasoning that makes turkey hunting a headshot-focused pursuit.

Body mass drives the size call: adult peafowl (male 4-6 kg/9-13 lb, female 2.75-4 kg/6-9 lb) run roughly 3-4x heavier than any other upland bird in this dataset. But Hawaii's statewide game-bird rule prohibits BB or larger shot except during the spring turkey hunt, a hard diameter ceiling that caps legal pellet size at #1 regardless of what a bird this size would otherwise call for. #2/#1 is therefore the largest legal pellet, not a physics-optimal one; a Hawaii peafowl hunter is working with smaller shot than this bird's size would ideally call for. Gauge is 12 only, rather than the lighter 12/20/28 spread typical for smaller Hawaii game birds; with pellet size capped by law, a larger shot charge is the one lever left to compensate. Choke stays moderate, Improved Cylinder to Modified, not extended toward Full despite the bird's size: peafowl are weak, reluctant fliers that flee mostly by running to cover, keeping this a short-range hunt regardless of body mass.

Shot size#1Estimate

A bird this size would normally call for steel BB or BBB, but Hawaii's shot-size ceiling caps legal steel at #1, a meaningfully lower-energy pellet than this body mass would ideally need, since steel's lower density makes this shortfall worse than for denser materials. #1 is simply the largest legal option. Improved Cylinder to Modified, unchanged from the lead baseline.

#1Estimate

#1 is both the size a bird of this mass class would call for and the largest size Hawaii's shot-size rule allows, the strongest-performing legal nontoxic choice for this species, unlike steel's compromised figure. Improved Cylinder to Modified, unchanged from the lead baseline.

#2Estimate

#2, comfortably under Hawaii's shot-size ceiling with no legal conflict, since tungsten-matrix's near-lead density needs little size-up for a bird this size. Improved Cylinder to Modified, matching the lead baseline.
