Unlike chukar (its combined-bag partner), gray partridge is a real, established wild SD population, confirmed by the regulation's own "Open statewide" listing, with no absence note. SD GFP's own partridge page gives only a general habitat description, grassy and agricultural areas, especially where there are shelterbelts and woodlots, with no published regional map or density breakdown. An independent ornithological reference (not SD GFP's own material) sharpens this into a real sub-state distinction, describing the species as an uncommon permanent resident throughout the state while also noting that the agricultural lands of eastern South Dakota make ideal habitat, i.e. present statewide on paper, but genuinely concentrated in the cropland/shelterbelt matrix of eastern SD, the same habitat type (winter cover, waste grain, fencerows) the source ties directly to the species' winter survival.
