South Carolina's ruffed grouse are confined entirely to Game Zone 1, and the season is restricted to that zone (SC's Blue Ridge/mountain counties); grouse are not present or hunted elsewhere in the state. SCDNR's own zone boundary is precise: it runs north of the main line of the Norfolk Southern Railroad from the Georgia state line to South Carolina Hwy 183 in Westminster, then north of SC Hwy 183 to Greenville and north of the Norfolk Southern main line to the Spartanburg County line, covering the northern portions of Oconee, Pickens, and Greenville counties, South Carolina's only Blue Ridge escarpment/mountain terrain. Within that zone, secondary hunting-focused sourcing converges on specific named public land: the Jocassee Gorges, the Andrew Pickens Ranger District of Sumter National Forest, and Caesars Head/Jones Gap and Buzzard Roost Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs), with a further micro-habitat note that birds concentrate above 2,000 feet in elevation, including hemlock groves near Whitewater Falls along the North Carolina border. This is the southern edge of ruffed grouse's Appalachian range, and the species faces the same long-term regional decline documented elsewhere in the Appalachians.
