Rhode Island's upland hunting is entirely put-and-take. Ring-necked pheasant and northern bobwhite quail are both pen-raised and released onto the same network of eleven state-managed Wildlife Management Areas, Arcadia, Black Hut, Big River, Buck Hill, Carolina, Durfee Hill, Eight Rod Farm, Great Swamp, Nicholas Farm, Sapowet Marsh, and Simmons Mill Pond, with releases before the season opens and continuing twice weekly through December. The general season for both species runs from mid-October through the end of February, with a separate youth pheasant weekend in early October at a narrower set of three of those areas, Great Swamp, Durfee Hill, and Eight Rod Farm. Block Island runs its own, geographically separate program: a rooster-only hunt on private land requiring written landowner permission, held on a handful of specific dates spread across the season rather than as a continuous open period.
