Range and concentration

Pennsylvania's American woodcock geography splits into a breeding/production stronghold and a distinct migratory-stopover concentration, rather than one uniform footprint. PGC's own singing-ground survey coverage and habitat-restoration partnerships (the Appalachian Mountains Woodcock Initiative, Golden-Winged Warbler Initiative) are concentrated in the same young-forest, largely public-land landscape that anchors the state's ruffed grouse stronghold -- the Allegheny high plateau of northwestern and northcentral PA, with Allegheny National Forest and the northern-tier counties (Tioga, Potter, McKean among others) repeatedly named as the state's best production and hunting habitat. Separately, southeastern Pennsylvania -- the Philadelphia area in particular -- functions as a critical spring and fall migratory stopover corridor rather than a breeding stronghold: Willistown Conservation Trust states directly that this region 'is critically important for migrating woodcock who need to stop over to refuel,' consistent with its location along the Atlantic Flyway migration corridor and its documented local viewing/monitoring sites (Rushton Woods Preserve, Ashbridge Preserve). PGC's own species materials describe woodcock habitat as 'widespread across PA' wherever early-successional cover exists, so this is a real production-vs-stopover distinction rather than a hard density claim across the whole state.

Population outlook

Pennsylvania 2026

Recorded 2026

The Singing-ground Survey cannot say whether Pennsylvania woodcock numbers are rising or falling. Its 2016 to 2026 estimate comes out at 2.50% per year, with a range from -0.70% to +5.89%, wide enough in both directions that no direction can be called. Read that as unknown, not as steady.
