Dusky grouse is the eastern-Oregon-only half of what Oregon regulations still refer to collectively as "blue grouse" (dusky and sooty grouse were split into separate species in 2006 but continue to share one Oregon hunting season and reporting category). Independent species-comparison sourcing describing Oregon specifically states dusky grouse "range includes the extent of the Blue Mountains," the interior mountain range system of far northeastern Oregon, distinguishing it from sooty grouse's Coast Range/Cascades/Warner Mountains footprint. ODFW's own 2021 Forest Grouse Parts Collection Summary corroborates this with harvest-wing county data: 57% of all statewide blue-grouse wings/tails came from eastern Oregon, with Wallowa (33%), Grant (17%), Baker (13%), and Union (11%) counties — all Blue Mountains counties — accounting for the large majority of eastern submissions. Because Oregon's own harvest reporting does not separately speciate dusky from sooty within the combined "blue grouse" category, this eastern-Oregon/Blue-Mountains county breakdown is the best available proxy for dusky grouse's specific distribution, corroborated independently by the Blue-Mountains-only range description.
