Scaled quail occupy a much smaller and more geographically distinct range within Oklahoma than the state's other quail species: ODWC and independent extension sourcing agree the species is restricted to the Oklahoma Panhandle, with smaller, more occasional populations along the far western edge of the state (southwestern Oklahoma). This is a genuine sub-state range boundary, not a shared regulatory footprint with northern bobwhite (the two species are hunted under one combined Oklahoma quail regulation but occupy clearly different geography) — bobwhite range is described as nearly statewide while scaled quail's arid, open-country habitat requirement (sand sagebrush grassland, shortgrass high plains, pinyon-juniper, and cholla-cactus country) confines it to the panhandle's semi-arid, high-plains landscape, ecologically closer to the desert Southwest than the rest of Oklahoma. ODWC's own 2022 August Roadside Survey report notes zero scaled quail were recorded on surveyed routes that year despite "several reports of scaled quail broods in Oklahoma's Panhandle," attributed to limited survey-route coverage of the panhandle rather than absence — underscoring that the panhandle is both the species' range and the practical limit of ODWC's own survey effort for it.
