Wild bobwhite quail season is closed statewide in NJ, with no exceptions outside a small set of preserves grandfathered from 2009-10. The only huntable quail are stocked birds, restricted to Peaslee WMA and Greenwood Forest WMA ONLY. 2026-27 stocked-hunt dates not yet published as of 2026-08-29. Reference only, NOT this year's dates: 2025-26 stocked-quail season was Nov. 8, 2025 (8 a.m.)–Jan. 31, 2026, closed Dec. 8–13 & 17, 2025, 4 quail/day.
Northern bobwhite is the most geographically layered of NJ's upland species: the wild population is closed statewide with hunting only on two stocked WMAs, but the wild-population question still has a real, sourced answer independent of huntability. New Jersey's last known wild, native coveys persisted specifically on state-owned land in Cumberland County (a severely declined remnant, roughly 82% down since 1966), and a separate, active NJDFW/NJ Audubon/Tall Timbers/University of Delaware translocation program has reintroduced Georgia-sourced wild birds into the Pine Barrens of Burlington County since 2015.
