Aggregate daily/possession bag shared with California quail.Bobwhite are rare in Idaho; introduced to the Boise Valley in the 1880s.
Northern bobwhite is rare in Idaho. It was introduced to the Boise Valley in the 1880s, and independent ornithological sourcing corroborates and sharpens this: the species is described as questionably established as a resident in scattered upland grasslands and farmland of southwestern Idaho, with most records elsewhere in the state being vagrants, summer visitors, or, particularly in eastern Idaho, releases of captive-raised birds rather than a wild population. A small overwintering presence has also been reported in the Panhandle. Idaho's cold, snowy winters are cited as the likely reason the species never became broadly established the way California quail did from a similar-era introduction.
Idaho's northern bobwhite quail season runs September 15, 2026 through January 31, 2027, with a daily bag of 10 shared in aggregate with California quail and 30 in possession. Bobwhite are rare in Idaho, limited to a population introduced to the Boise Valley in the 1880s. IDFG's statewide forecast, published September 4, 2026, doesn't break quail out by species region by region, but the Southwest region, which covers the Boise Valley, reports quail in good numbers this year, though broods are on the small side.
Good adult quail numbers in the Boise Valley area this year, tempered by smaller broods.
