Georgia is primarily a wintering/transient state for woodcock, with independent wetland-bird guide sourcing stating it is "widespread across Georgia, occurring particularly in the Piedmont and Coastal Plain," and that some breeding populations are established in the northern and central parts of the state, distinct from the much larger winter/transient population. Coastal Georgia specifically has been the subject of direct USGS field research on wintering woodcock (habitat use and survival rates of wintering birds in coastal South Carolina and Georgia), finding wintering birds using bottomland hardwoods, young pine plantations, mature pine-hardwood stands, and naturally regenerated clear-cuts, with wax myrtle dominating the understory used. This gives a real two-part regional picture: broad statewide (Piedmont + Coastal Plain) winter presence, with a specific, USGS-studied concentration on the coast.
