Chukar's season is statewide with no hunt-zone restriction, but the species' real population is geographically concentrated. CDFW's own CWHR life-history account (Ahlborn 2008) describes the introduced (1932) species as established predominantly east of the Sierra Nevada and Cascade Range, and along the inner Coast Ranges from Pacheco Pass to the Tehachapi Mountains, occupying Great Basin and Mojave Desert vegetation associations from below sea level in Death Valley up to 12,000 feet in the White Mountains.
Governed by CDFW's combined Quail (California/Gambel's/Mountain) and Chukar Hunting Outlook press release; publish date has moved year to year. Not yet published as of August 30; based on the 2024-25 window, expected mid-September to late October 2026.
