Open ONLY in Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr & Willacy counties (Rio Grande Valley). Not a closed species as might be assumed: Texas publishes a real open season with bag/possession limits for it.
TPWD's own South Texas Plains habitat page states the species' Texas range is restricted to four counties, Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr, and Willacy, the Lower Rio Grande Valley at the state's southern tip, corroborated independently by the Texas Breeding Bird Atlas (56 confirmed/probable/possible breeding sites across three survey latilongs entirely within the South Texas Brush Country/Coastal Sand Plain, with the only Breeding Bird Survey route recording the species averaging 3.4 individuals at Laguna Atascosa, Cameron Co). TPWD's same habitat page names the specific public-land access points directly: the five-unit Las Palomas Wildlife Management Area (Baird, Anacua, Carricitos, Longoria, and Tucker units, plus the Boca Chica and Penitas units), Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, Falcon State Park, and the Resaca de la Palma/Llano Grande World Birding Center sites, all four in-range counties represented. Habitat driver stated directly by TPWD: tall, thorny thickets, scrubland, and second-growth forest edge, consistent with the species' documented preference for dense understory adjacent to more open woodland.
No formal population survey program exists for this species in this state.
