Both Virginia rail and sora are well-documented breeders in North Dakota's Prairie Pothole Region wetlands: a USGS wetland-birds management-practices summary and independent range sourcing place the core of both species' Prairie Pothole Region breeding range squarely across the northern Great Plains including North Dakota, and J. Clark Salyer National Wildlife Refuge, North Dakota's largest NWR at 58,700 acres, sited in the Souris River/Missouri Coteau-adjacent marsh country of north-central ND, names both Virginia Rail and Sora directly among its confirmed wetland-breeding species. The state's wetland density itself is not uniform: it concentrates in the glaciated Missouri Coteau (west-central ND) and Drift Prairie (east-central/northeast ND) pothole belts, and thins sharply in the unglaciated Badlands/Little Missouri National Grasslands country of the state's far southwest.
