ND Game and Fish's upland game brood survey reports a statewide partridge index (2025: 16 birds/100 miles, down 26% year-over-year) but, unlike pheasant and sharp-tailed grouse, does not publish a region-by-region partridge breakdown in its brood-survey press releases. The best available sub-state signal is county-level harvest data, which tracks the same southwest/northwest geography that dominates the state's pheasant and sharp-tailed grouse harvest.
North Dakota's late-summer brood survey put partridge numbers at 13 observed per 100 miles this year, within the same range the population has held the past few seasons. The state still expects hunters to encounter more partridge than an average season, with numbers running above the long-term average. Broods are running a bit smaller than usual, averaging around 8 chicks per hen versus a normal year's 10 to 12.
No specific cause was named for the partridge count. The same release names hot, dry stretches as the driver behind a poor sharp-tailed grouse year, but doesn't extend that explanation to partridge.
