Greater prairie-chicken has no current self-sustaining wild population in Montana to regionalize. The Montana Field Guide's own species account states the species is now extirpated from the state and names exactly one documented Montana record in its entire history: a 1937 observation at Medicine Lake National Wildlife Refuge in the extreme northeast corner (Sheridan County), the far western edge of the species' historical Great Plains range. "Prairie chicken" remains in Montana's statutory upland-game-bird definition, and the regulations booklet's season tables carry no line for it at all, matching a species that is legally definable but has nothing left to hunt.
