Mississippi's only huntable upland species is northern bobwhite quail, with a season running from late November through the first week of March. The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks maintains no regional density map or zone system for the bird; the one active monitoring effort, a joint call-count survey run each June with Mississippi State University, is deliberately spread across wildlife management areas in the northeast, west-central, southwest, south, south-central, and southeast parts of the state rather than concentrated in one region. Quail numbers have declined substantially from historical levels statewide, and hunting here is best treated as a statewide, undifferentiated pursuit rather than one with a defined hotspot.
