Indiana's 2026-27 season is Suspended statewide, and the species was added to the State Endangered list in December 2020. IDNR's own Ruffed Grouse Wildlife Management Fact Sheet gives a precise current-range description: the range today is limited to the south central and southeastern third of the state in the southern hill country, with a few pockets in counties bordering Michigan, down from a 1983 peak (its widest distribution since 1865) of 41 of Indiana's 92 counties. That same document names the species' 1960s remnant, or residual, range, the small set of counties every later reestablishment effort was trapped and transplanted from, as exactly six named counties: Brown, Jackson, Monroe, Morgan, Martin, and Lawrence, the same south-central hill country the current range description still centers on. This is a closed, non-huntable population statewide, but a real, precisely documented range.
