HIP registration required annually.Shooting hours are sunrise to sunset -- an explicit exception from the standard 1/2-hour-before-sunrise migratory bird shooting hours used for doves/geese/ducks.
Iowa DNR does not publish a hunting-zone map or region breakdown for woodcock (the season is statewide, no zone restrictions). But the agency's own habitat-targeting program draws a real sub-state line: the CRP/SAFE practice built specifically for Ruffed Grouse and American Woodcock habitat is limited to six northeast-Iowa driftless counties, matching the species' need for young hardwood forest that is largely confined to that unglaciated corner of the state.
The Singing-ground Survey, which is the instrument behind every woodcock population figure, does not run routes in Iowa. There is no state-level woodcock trend to report.
