Legal game bird under HAR §13-122-6 (Francolinus pondicerianus), a distinct species from mainland Gray/Hungarian Partridge (Perdix perdix), which does not occur in Hawaii. Bag combined with Chukar and Black Francolin. Present at least on Oahu (Kuaokala GMA, Makua Kea'au PHA). 2026-27 dates not yet published as of 2026-08-29; 2025-26 reference: Nov 1, 2025 - Jan 25, 2026. DOFAW's last 5 years of announcements all came out in October, so this isn't overdue yet.
Gray Francolin, per the Bishop Museum's Pyle & Pyle "Birds of the Hawaiian Islands" reference monograph, was released by DOFAW's predecessor agency in 1958-62 to Kaua'i (>375), Moloka'i (>160), Lana'i and Maui and Hawai'i Island (>450 each), and reached O'ahu via a later, undocumented release possibly as late as the 1980s. It is now established on all six main Southeastern Hawaiian Islands, with no reports from Ni'ihau or Kaho'olawe. Hunting continued at a low rate through the mid-2010s, concentrated on Lana'i, Maui, and Hawai'i Island. Kaua'i's population is the smallest and most geographically confined of the six -- the mirror image of this species' pattern in Chukar, where Kaua'i is also the weakest island.
