Chukar (introduced 1923-1961, most successfully from a 1949 release of 34 birds at Pohakuloa, Hawai'i Island) are established on Hawai'i Island, Maui, Moloka'i, Kaua'i, and Lana'i, per the Bishop Museum's Pyle & Pyle "Birds of the Hawaiian Islands" reference monograph. Hawai'i Island holds the largest and densest population by a wide margin, followed by Maui; Kaua'i's population is the smallest and possibly declining. The species was extirpated from O'ahu by the 1970s (occasional strays near Ka'ena Point since, likely escapees from that area's public hunting unit) and its historical status on Kaho'olawe is unresolved.
