Legal game bird under HAR §13-122-6 (Geopelia striata, called 'Small Dove' in exhibits), naturalized resident species, regulated as upland game under the state license/stamp system. Rule-book default gives it the main Nov-Jan season at 20/hunter plus a private-land-only late season (4th Sat Jan through last Sun March). Neither confirmed applied for 2026-27; DOFAW's annual announcement not yet published as of 2026-08-29. DOFAW's last 5 years of game-bird season announcements all came out in October, so this isn't overdue yet.
HAR's "Barred Dove" (Geopelia striata) is the species ornithologists have called Zebra Dove since 1983. The Bishop Museum's Pyle & Pyle "Birds of the Hawaiian Islands" reference monograph lists "Barred Dove" itself as this species' pre-1983 name, confirming the two labels refer to the same bird. It is one of Hawaii's most thoroughly established game birds: brought from a 1922 Singapore shipment to Kaua'i, O'ahu, Moloka'i, and Maui, it had reached and become common on every Southeastern Island except Hawai'i I by the late 1930s, then established there too and has since grown to notably higher densities on Hawai'i I than its founding islands ever held. A 1946-47 survey (Schwartz & Schwartz) found its two largest historical populations, and its highest recorded densities (up to 800 birds per square mile), in the dry lowlands of O'ahu and Moloka'i; Ni'ihau holds a substantial population too (reportedly the island's most abundant species by 1947) but, is not written as a region here since it carries no public access of any kind. A small, real breeding population also persists on Kaho'olawe.
