Historically present in the Arkansas Ozarks but extirpated roughly 1900-1925 due to habitat loss and unregulated market/sport hunting. AGFC attempted reintroduction in the Ozark National Forest (Fallsville/Cowell area) during the 1980s-90s; it did not establish a huntable population. No mention anywhere in the 2026-27 guidebook; no season exists today.
