Arkansas's upland hunting centers on northern bobwhite quail, open statewide on private land from November through early February, though many individual Arkansas Game and Fish Commission wildlife management areas run their own separate quail dates and limits rather than following the statewide rule. Population density splits along a highlands-versus-lowlands line: the Ozark and Ouachita mountain regions in the northwest and west-central part of the state carry meaningfully higher quail numbers than the Delta and Gulf Coastal Plain, tied to long-term land-use stability and large contiguous U.S. Forest Service holdings. Within that stronger half of the state, Fort Chaffee Wildlife Management Area and Corps of Engineers land along the Arkansas, Petit Jean, and Fouche LaFave rivers hold the best local populations.
