Alaska's state bird.Regulated together with rock and white-tailed ptarmigan under one shared 'Ptarmigan' table; identical unit/date/bag structure across all three species (no species-specific sub-limits, unlike grouse). Units 12, 20, and 25C have a split season (Aug 10-Feb 28 then Mar 1-Apr 30). Full by-unit table: ADF&G 2026-2027 smgame.pdf p.141. Non-toxic-shot requirements are tracked separately in data/2026/non-toxic-shot/ak.json.
Willow ptarmigan (Alaska's state bird) has the widest range in Alaska of any upland game bird, occupying willow-thicket and tundra habitat across nearly the entire state. ADF&G's own species profile names the only real statewide gaps: the broad, forested river valleys of the Interior (even there the species turns up occasionally in winter), the thick, closed-canopy woods of Southeast Alaska, and the Aleutian Islands west of Unimak Island. Within that huge range, ADF&G's own annual RY24 statewide wing-donation program (383 wings total) shows a clear concentration pattern that lines up with its own breeding-survey network: the Seward Peninsula, the Alaska Range, and Southcentral Alaska together accounted for the large majority of harvested birds, while the Interior's forested valleys — despite being geographically enormous — produced the fewest donations of any surveyed region (27 of 383), consistent with the species profile's own note that broad forested Interior valleys are one of its few real gaps.
ADF&G's 2026 Alaska Small Game Summary is the most positive of any Alaska combo this year: hunters are likely to encounter more willow ptarmigan throughout much of the Alaska Range, and possibly more in Southcentral, with specifically positive reports from the Seward Peninsula. Alaska's state bird and its widest-ranging upland species: a genuine up year, not just an average-to-good one.
Warm and dry conditions this season, named directly by ADF&G as the driver behind the improved outlook.
